This module looks at pharmacy’s public health role in diabetes.
To review public health policy and opportunities around diabetes risk reduction and prevention.
After completing this module, you should be more aware of:
· updates in the NICE guideline PH38 on ‘Type 2 diabetes: prevention in people at high risk’;
· the significance of the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, NHS Health Check and National Diabetes Audit;
· expectations being put on commissioners for more pharmacy involvement in public health;
· examples of community pharmacy services and roles in diabetes public health.
What proportion of your customers do you think might be eligible for an NHS Health Check? How many patients do you think might be at a higher risk of developing diabetes? What services which can make an impact on diabetes do you actively promote or get involved in?
What opportunities are there in the forthcoming months to promote healthy lifestyle messages around diabetes prevention? Are local commissioners looking to increase NHS Health Check coverage? When do you want to complete this learning activity? And how will it help your CPD?
In addition to reading this article, what other activities will you do? What resources have you identified or used?
How will you put your learning into practice? Could you try engaging customers in a conversation about the NHS Health Check or advice about diabetes prevention? What were their reactions and comments? Do you think that there might be sufficient support for a pharmacy service that you could raise it with local health commissioners, or the LPC, for further investigation?
