Oriel - the new pre-registration recruitment platform

What is Oriel?

A new centralised recruitment and selection process for pre-registration pharmacist posts in England and Wales will be introduced from summer 2017. The new application process will utilise the Oriel IT system and is a direct replacement for the Pharmalife application process. The Oriel IT system is already used to support the recruitment of both dentists and doctors. It is expected that all hospital and the majority of community pre-registration pharmacist posts across England and Wales will be recruited to via this process.

Using the Oriel IT system 4th year MPharm students will be able to apply using a single application for all of the available advertised posts. Students will also be able to state their preferences for both hospital and community posts during the application process.

What role do the BPSA have in this?

The BPSA are a vocal member of the Health Education England (HEE) ‘Pre-Registration Pharmacist Recruitment Operations Group’, which supports the development of the new national recruitment system for pre-registration pharmacists from 2017. As a stakeholder, we ensure that the work carried out is in the best interest of our members and will provide a benefit to them.

Can students get any further information?

To ensure that common queries are answered in the information supplied by both BPSA and HEE in the coming months; the BPSA are hosting a campaign to find out what students want to know about the new centralised recruitment and selection process? We have opened up a survey for students to ask any questions, (big or small), that you want answered.

The BPSA survey is available here: https://goo.gl/forms/J2ULaO0cHUV5iKBH3

The BPSA will be using all the questions asked by our members to create a FAQ document. The FAQ document will aim to answer common queries surrounding both the Oriel IT system and the new centralised recruitment and selection process.

HEE will be providing further information in Spring 2017 at events held at each School of Pharmacy in England and Wales. HEE also provide information on a regular basis through the publication of the ‘Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacist Recruitment Newsletter’.
